In videos, Bush, Chertoff appear calm before Katrina

Why shouldn't they? It's not like they were sitting in an apartment in a New Orleans housing project.

In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned President George W. Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New Orleans' Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to video footage.

Didn't Bush say he wasn't warned about the possibilities of the breech of the New Orleans levees? And like so many incidents lately, we have proof of otherwise on tape. You know why I don't lie when people ask me things? Cause somebody probably has what I really did or said on tape somewhere. You think the President of the United States would know this but apparently not.

Homeland Security officials have said the "fog of war" blinded them early on to the magnitude of the disaster.

Hey, the war is in the Middle East, Katrina hit in the American south. Fog don't travel that far.

But the video and transcripts show federal and local officials discussed threats, reviewed plans and understood Katrina would wreak devastation.

Good thing they did something to prevent the devastation. This story is making me a whee-bit angry. I mean, they may have been poor Americans in New Orleans that suffered from Katrina but they were still Americans. And while I can't say I agree with shooting at the rescue workers and the looting...I'm beginning to understand it a bit more.
Bush said four days after the storm, "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees." He later clarified, saying officials believed that the levees survived, after the storm passed. But the transcripts and video show there was plenty of talk about that possibility before the storm, and that Bush was worried.

So, this should be interesting to watch the Republicans (the ones that still like Bush) try to spin this one as to not look as fucked up as it is. It's too bad most Americans won't notice. American Idol was on last night.
