US air marshals kill passenger over bomb threat

Everybody's talking about it. The reports are simplistic so far. Man claims he has a bomb, air marshals order him to do something, he doesn't, makes a move for his bag and gets an early lead-filled Christmas present. Now of course comes the aftermath which, not surprisingly includes debate over whether the air marshals were justified.

Here's the story, or what's being reported as the story thanks to CNN:

A 44-year-old U.S. citizen who claimed to have a bomb was shot and killed when air marshals opened fire on a boarding bridge at the Miami airport, several sources told CNN. No bomb was found.
American Airlines Flight 924 was in Miami on a stopover during a flight from Medellin, Colombia, to Orlando, Florida, when the man, identified as Rigoberto Alpizar, said there was a bomb in his carry-on backpack, a Department of Homeland Security official said.
Alpizar was confronted by a team of federal air marshals, who followed him down the boarding bridge and ordered him to get on the ground, the official said.

When Alpizar appeared to reach into his backpack, he was shot and wounded, the official said, adding that the marshals' actions were consistent with their training. Officials said later that the man died of his injuries.
Upon investigation, there was no evidence that Alpizar had a bomb, an official said.

Pretty cut and dry if you ask me. Personally, if I'm on a plane and someone claims to have a bomb I would attempt to decapitate them with my tray table. In these times claiming to have a bomb on a plane is pretty much like claiming to be the son of God in Roman times. It's going to get your ass killed.
So what's the argument? Sounds like the air marshals did what they were supposed to do right? It's not like the guy said "This vacations going to be the bomb" and he was shot twenty times in the face.

The shooting death by a U.S. air marshal has drawn both praise and criticism. Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation Subcommittee on Aviation, was quick to commend the marshals action.
"This should send a message to a terrorist or anyone else who is considering disrupting an aircraft with a threat," Mica told The Washington Post.
However, aviation security consultant Douglas Laird of Laird & Associates said shooting a suspect who claims to be carrying an explosive device could cause a greater threat to passengers if that suspect detonates the bomb after being shot.

I understand that a wounded man may detonate the bomb before passing into the great beyond. That's why I offer a solution. If someone claims to have a bomb, shoot them in the face. Dead in the face. No ifs ands or buts, no negotiations, no calling in a psychiartrist to talk to the nutcase. It should be that cut and dry. If you are stupid enough, or deranged enough, to claim to have a bomb, even if you don't, the authorities are doing us all a favor by removing you from the gene pool.

It may sound harsh but come on people, it's time to start holding people accountable for their actions. Passengers claimed they saw a woman running after Alpizar claiming to be his wife and stating that he was bi-polar and not on his medication.

Two things here:

1. I've been around a lot of bi-polar people. None have ever claimed to have a bomb. I'm not saying that I'm doubting the air marshals reports that Alpizar claimed to have a bomb, I'm just suggesting that there was more than bi-polar disorder at work here.
2. You bi-polar...Take your fucking meds. Are innocent people on planes supposed to be subjected to a bomb scare and irrational behavior because you decided you didn't want to take your little blue pill? Are air marshals supposed to calm you down cause you have a "disorder"? Fuck no.

"I have a bomb."
BANG!
End of story. This would be a whole other discussion if the man had had a bomb.
