Fake Firefighter Suspect Caught In Tennessee

A fugitive New York fashion writer wanted for questioning in the Halloween night sexual attack on a woman in her Manhattan apartment by a man posing as a city firefighter was captured Friday on a college campus in Tennessee, police said.

Peter Braunstein, 42, slashed himself in the neck with a knife after he was confronted by police on the University of Memphis campus, police said.

Braunstein, who had tormented investigators for weeks by popping up in public, only to disappear again, was spotted on campus by a woman who police said recognized him from media reports.

"He said, 'I'm the person you're looking for,' and he stabbed himself three times in the neck," Browne said.

Memphis police Sgt. Vincent Higgins said Braunstein was hospitalized in critical condition.

Several times over the past two months, the NYPD had swarmed neighborhoods from where someone had called in a Braunstein sighting, NewsChannel 4 reported. But the trail had gone cold until, in recent weeks, sources said Braunstein went to Ohio and then to Tennessee.

In Chelsea, neighbors said they were breathing easier.

"I'm glad he's caught," said Carol Bowden. "Let's put it that way."

"It took far too long, but it's not their fault the guy's a creep," said Carol Krol.

"He destroyed the holiday for children who live in the building who were trick-or-treating while he was doing what he was doing," said Tom Carroll.
